Story Ideas
Hello! After a very productive and motivating chat with Mel, I have some work to do!
With January around the corner, I'm working on a few fitness-related ideas, seeing what they blossom into! More to come on these...
In other thoughts, I have a LOT of resources. Lists of phone numbers and names and emails. Websites with internship links. Websites about the industry. I'm searching for a way to compile all of this into something that is organized (as glamorous as the messy journalist dream seems, it's smarter and better for me to be on top of the endless papers and sticky notes). Anyone have any suggestions?

Published!
I held off on posting links to the briefs I've gotten in the Gazette, but I'm going to throw them in! I feel like a bonafide writer now that I've had a 'real story' in the paper:

Here are my briefs:
...jk!

http://www.westerngazette.ca/2010/10/28/lindros-opens-new-building/
And finally, here's something I did for the Campus Rec website:

Suddenly I'm building a portfolio and there's actually things to go in it!
Do you guys remember your first 'real' article? How'd you feel? What'd you do next?

Let me in, let me in!
"Dear Admissions,
I want to be a journalist. Can you help me?"
...Think this would work?
I've sent emails to just a couple of schools in between course work, midterms, and assignments. It's a great distraction, as is checking out admissions requirements for journalism programs at all kinds of schools!
I called Columbia on Tuesday. The woman there assured me that I do not need to apply as an international student (since I am a US student, even though I will have a Canadian degree) and made my day when she told me that GPA DOES NOT MATTER. "Take a holistic approach," she said. If she wasn't miles and miles away I might have kissed her feet.
The GPA not mattering stands in contrast to the news I got from Ryerson: if you have a good enough GPA, you can get in without a portfolio. The admissions counsellor in Toronto was an extremely friendly lady who encouraged me to apply anyways: GPA and especially the ACADEMIC REFERENCES are key for them, she said. I would wait and apply for next next fall, but I am considering going for it now that she was so positive about the whole process. There is an information session scheduled for the end of this month that I plan on attending before I invest any time/energy in the application/worrying associated with applying.

Meeting with Mel
Starting this blog without giving credit to the person who gave me the idea would be a major faux pas. I am lucky enough to have taken a "Writing for Publication" course that showed me that journalism is a feasible career option for me. I am even luckier enough to have had a prof who genuinely WANTS her students to be successful!
Thanks to a meeting yesterday, I've got freelancing ideas, insight about grad school for journalism, and maybe most importantly, confidence!
